The Golden State Warriors knew heading into training camp that they would be without Jimmy Butler after he tore his ACL last season. The roster was also lacking depth, so the team knew injuries would need to be kept to a minimum this season.
However, at the start of training camp, the Warriors received more bad news. Center Kristaps Porzingis experienced a sudden health issue that left head coach Steve Kerr concerned.
Yeah, I mean, you know, we want him back. He's a really talented player, and so we thought he was in a pretty good place. So it's definitely concerning. And so, as I said, all we're going to do is support him, give him every bit of medical help he can get, and emotional support, and hope he is back soon." Kerr said.
Over the weekend, more injury concerns emerged as Brandin Podziemski and Steph Curry both dealt with injuries. Podziemski was dealing with a back issue, while Curry suffered an ankle injury.
"During a scrimmage, Curry tried to make a turn near midcourt and immediately appeared to feel something in his right leg. The mood inside the arena — joyous and filled with fans for most of the day — instantly turned to concern. He made his way slowly back to the Warriors' sideline, held his arms down at his sides, spoke with a member of the training staff and tried to shake it off. After a few seconds, Curry shook his head and gingerly made his way to the locker room with team personnel," The Athletic's Nick Friedell wrote.
With the season beginning Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers , Curry appears to be ready to play, while Podziemski has been ruled out.
"Brandin Podziemski is out for the Warriors tomorrow night in Los Angeles. Lower back soreness. He played all 82 games last season but will miss the opener this season against the Lakers. Steph Curry is probable," ESPN's Anthony Slater wrote.
The Warriors appear to have avoided a major injury concern with Curry, while the team will likely take precautions to ensure Podziemski's back issue does not worsen. Golden State knows how important its depth will be throughout the season, making the health of its key players crucial.
Curry's condition will be worth monitoring Wednesday night to see how he responds to the ankle issue. The Warriors and Lakers are set for an intriguing matchup to open the season, and Golden State will hope to have its star guard ready to go.
